This weekend: Texas Top Star and Ice House workshops

Tonight is the preliminary round of auditions for the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce‘s Texas Top Star competition, when 90 performers will be whittled down to the 20 best to appear again tomorrow. Paying $6 at the Texas Theatre door either tonight or tomorrow night (or $10 for both nights) will get you in to see the local singers vie for the title in an "American Idol"-esque format. It promises to be amusing at the least, and who knows what kind of talent may emerge from it?

The Ice House Cultural Center is hosting a couple of interesting workshops this Saturday. From 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. is a 35mm photography workshop teaching students how to maximize the use of either their digital or traditional film cameras. From 11 a.m.-12:30 is a collage-making class, where students will learn an advanced collage technique (and should dress for working with glue). The photography workshop is $25 and the collage workshop $20; both are for ages 12 and up, and you can register at 214.670.7524.
