More Lakewood neighbors seek return to alley trash pick-up

Another Lakewood neighborhood wants changes to its trash pick-up. Neighbors in the 6600-6800 blocks of Velasco and Lakeshore Drive had their trash pick-up changed from alley service to curb service under One Day Dallas.

But some contend that the alley is big enough for the new garbage trucks, and they want the city to change it back. Susan Schuerger and Maggie Radford are working on a petition in favor of the change. They’ve requested a meeting with the city’s director of  sanitation services, Mary Nix.

"The city will consider doing alley service if the trucks will fit in the alley and if there’s a continuous, two-block length for them to run the truck," Schuerger says.

It’s not enough that the city says the trucks can’t run in the alley — she wants them to prove it. Peninsula Neighborhood residents recently had success in getting its trash collection changed.

Schuerger’s home has a rear driveway, so she has to pick up her garbage and recycling cans and carry them across her lawn to the curb each week.

"I don’t mind the once-a-week pick-up. Even though I have a big family, we are good recyclers, so we don’t have that much trash," she says. "But I just think this is absurd that we all have to carry our stuff to the street if the alley is serviceable."

I live in Forest Hills. Hauling those two huge and heavy trashcans to the front is a chore for both my husband and me. I believe our alley is wide enough to accommodate the trash truck and it runs more than 2 blocks consecutively. How do I get them to return the pickup to the alley. It would help a lot of us out here.

The worst part of the whole thing is that you have NO IDEA when the trash truck will come by. For the last few weeks, the came around 3:30 in the afternoon and today they showed up at 7:15 as I was taking my can around front…just in case. Sanitation is getting a call…..!

Because our garage and driveway are also in the back (on alley), it’s a big hassle to take those large containers to the front (street). But I would just like to know definitively what the deal is, because even though I called and they said pick-up is only on the street now, every so often my recycling and trash will both be emptied — even though I forgot to put them out and they stayed in the alley! So which is it?

It is very unattractive to drive down the street with multiple trash cans infront of all the homes. In addition to that, when the trash is picked up in the morning and the cans stay out all afternoon, it notifies potential criminals which homeowner is not at home.

Rachel: Can you keep us updated on this. Fortunately, I have alley pick up but they keep tearing up my fence.
