The new aquatics center at Kidd Springs will have a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool, plus a separate children’s pool. It will also have a 3,000-to-4,000-square-foot bathhouse with showers and restrooms, plus an office and break room for employees. The plans include resurfacing the parking lot and to keep the existing playground as is. The new design will have more shade and more pool space for adult exercise and lap swimming.

Kidd Springs Recreation Center has the largest municipal swim team in Dallas; more than 100 kids signed up last year. The proposed six-lane lap pool would be the minimum size required to host a swim meet, although swim-team folks say they would prefer eight lanes.

Design work has not yet begun on the project, and neighbors at Thursday’s meeting were asked to rank amenities for the pools.

For the main pool, the amenities offered are: Diving boards, flume slides, a basketball goal and a climbing wall.

For the kids’ pool, the amenities are: Jungle gym, tot slides, spray features and zero-depth entry.

The top two preferences among meeting attendees were diving boards and flume slides for the main pool. They gave top votes to the the jungle gym and zero-depth entry for the kiddie pool.

The designers will consider comments received at the meeting in their plans, and then there will be more community meetings to hash out the design proposals.

The design should be finalized by the end of this year. Demolition and construction is expected to begin at the end of the 2017 season, and the new pool would open in summer 2018.
