The shopping center known as Southwest Center Mall is reverting back to its original name.

Owner Peter Brodsky announced the change this past weekend during a meeting regarding the mall’s coming redevelopment, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Everyone calls it Red Bird already.  Southwest Center Mall never stuck. While we are operating in this current format, we will continue to call it Southwest Center Mall.  When the redevelopment begins, we will rechristen it.

Red Bird Mall poached department stores from Jefferson Boulevard when it originally opened in 1975. It was renamed in 1996, after it sold to a California-based investment company. Around that time, neighborhood signifiers also were scrubbed from Red Bird Airport and Oak Cliff Country Club, now the Dallas Executive Airport and the Golf Club of Dallas, respectively.

The mall is losing its current retail anchor, Macy’s, after the retailer announced the closure of 68 Texas stores, including the one at Southwest Center Mall.
