Winnetka Elementary is actually 106 years old, but its building turned 80 this year.

The school kicked off a weeklong celebration of the anniversary Friday as part of its annual fall carnival. Texas state Rep. Jessica Gonzalez and Dallas ISD trustee Ben Mackey presented certificates to students, coaches and the school’s championship robotics team. The week’s festivities also include an alumni mixer, a dance, a movie night and a time-capsule ceremony.

Winnetka Elementary first opened in a four-room frame structure in 1913 on its current site on Edgefield, which at the time was a pasture. The current building was erected in 1939.

Winnetka Elementary Lourdes Garundo accepts a plaque from Dallas ISD trustee Ben Mackey as part of the school’s 80th anniversary.
