Police believe Miguel Deleon was firing at another vehicle when he shot Carlos Roque in the 800 block of South Madison Avenue at about 2:30 p.m., the Dallas Morning News reports.

Deleon initially told police that three people in another car shot at their vehicle and that one of their bullets struck Roque. But a police affidavit says burn marks around the gunshot wound show that Roque was shot at close range. Deleon also pulled his cousin’s body out of his truck and left him on the side of the road, the affidavit states.

Deleon told police that he shot at the other vehicle and went home to hide his gun. Police found a 9-mm handgun at his home. Deleon is also awaiting trial on an aggravated assault charge related to a shooting in February 2019, and as a condition of his release from jail in that case, he wasn’t allowed to possess a deadly weapon, the newspaper reports.

Deleon is in the Dallas County jail with bond set at $500,000.
