The Better Block building at 700 W. Davis could become a restaurant if the owner is permitted to create a new subdistrict to allow it.

Here’s the wording of the request:

The property has nine parking spaces on site, plus six spaces on West Davis.

Building owner Craig Schenkel and representatives from the Better Block declined to comment on the zoning change request, filed Nov. 15. Better Block founder Jason Roberts is also a restaurateur who co-owns Oddfellows and Revelers Hall in the Bishop Arts District, as well as Frenchmen All Day in New Orleans.

The West Davis building was constructed in 1932 as a Conoco gas station, according to the Texas Historical Commission. It was the office of Ruth Chenoweth’s real estate firm until she died in 2006. Brumley Gardens had an outpost there for a couple of years before the Better Block leased it in 2016.
