The South Oak Cliff Golden Bears could become the new Texas UIL 5A state champions if they win this coming weekend.
SOC faces Liberty Hill in the state final game at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Tickets cost $20.
A Dallas ISD school hasn’t won a state championship since 1958, when the segregated Booker T. Washington High School won the Prairie View Interscholastic League title. Sunset High School won a UIL title in 1950, when it was a whites-only school.
Three of the SOC players share an ancestor, Abdul Muhammad Sr., who played on that 1958 championship team for Booker T.
By the way, Duncanville High School also won its semifinal and is headed to the 6A UIL state championship, also this coming Saturday at the Dallas Cowboys stadium. Duncanville head coach Reginald Samples is a SOC alumnus.
