The bar and restaurant, whose owners live in Oak Cliff, is known for its dedication to mescal, romantic vibes and multicultural entertainment offerings. It was the first mescalería in Dallas, and it “helped Dallas fall in love with mescal.”

Owners Shad Kvetko and Taylor Samuels spun off the Exposition Park bar from a pop-up they had about 10 years ago with friends in Bishop Arts. Las Almas Rotas opened in 2017, and it also made the James Beard semifinalist list in 2020. The James Beard Foundation’s awards are among the highest honors in the American culinary field.

The list of 2022 semifinalists also includes these other top chefs and restaurants in Dallas:

Anastacia Quiñones-Pittman of José, best chef

Matt McCallister of Homewood, best chef

Misti Norris of Petra and the Beast, best chef

Regino Rojas of Revolver Taco Lounge, best chef

José, outstanding hospitality

Sachet, outstanding wine program
