The fugitive unit was serving a capital murder warrant in the moments leading up to an officer-involved shooting near Kessler Park.

According to Kristin Lowman, a spokesperson for the Dallas Police department, officers had located a capital murder suspect in a vehicle at the Bahama Glen apartment complex around 3:00 p.m.

The warrant was not regarding a Dallas police case, although Lowman said it is a North Texas murder.

Lowman said the suspect was a passenger in the car, and multiple fugitive unit officers yelled verbal commands to exit the vehicle. The driver exited and was taken into custody.

The suspect did not exit the vehicle and fired a shot at the officers, to which they responded with gunfire.

Lowman said one officer was hit in the foot and was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to recover.

The suspect was hit by the gunfire and is in critical condition, Lowman said.

“This was a high risk apprehension,” Lowman said.

Bahama Glenn resident Christina Mendez said she was unloading groceries when she heard a “bomb sound,” that was so loud it was startling.

Mendez says she looked out her window, and right outside her apartment several law enforcement officers were yelling at a man. She says for three to four minutes she heard officers yelling at the man not to move.

Then, Mendez says she heard over 10 gunshots.

“I ran and grabbed my kids,” Mendez said. “We just ducked, hiding.”

Mendez said she then watched officers attempt to resuscitate the man for over fifteen minutes.

Mendez does not know if the man was a resident at the apartment complex, but says the complex has been closed due to the incident and she has not been able to leave her apartment to pick up her older children from school.

Lowman said the complex remains an active crime scene, and it is unclear when residents will be able to enter and exit the location.

Dallas Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that just occurred at the Bahama Glen apartments located at the 2500 block of Bahama Dr.

According to multiple tweets, there is a heavy police presence at an apartment complex near the intersection of Hampton Road and Fort Worth Avenue and helicopters are circling the area.

Police have not stated whether there were serious injuries, but said reinforcements and a public information officer are en route to the scene.

The shooting occurred after officers arrived to the apartment complex to serve an arrest warrant, Rebecca Lopez of WFAA tweeted.
