Texas Capital’s grant will facilitate construction of “The Texas Capital Landing,” the park’s highest elevation, featuring panoramic views of downtown Dallas and an elevated open plaza surrounding a rain wall water feature.

Currently, the bridge itself and the foundation for the park are completed, and next will be the added design elements like the landing, green space, and walking paths.

Phase I of the project broke ground in October, which will include most of the features that the community requested in outreach meetings like a multi-purpose pavilion, large lawn, children’s playground, and turnaround for food trucks and drop-offs.

The future deck park will span I-35E in Southern Dallas between Ewing and Marsalis Avenues and will be directly adjacent to the Dallas Zoo, reconnecting historic Oak Cliff.

In 2017, Opportunity Dallas convened a task force to study the effects of segregation and lack of affordable housing available in Dallas. The study found that a lack of mobility and investment in low-income communities plays a major role in generational poverty. Their study, presented to the City of Dallas in early 2018, revealed that this new park will connect two of the lowest-income census tracts in Dallas, helping to address the lack of mobility while generating economic investment in the surrounding areas.

Construction on Southern Gateway Park is expected to be completed sometime in 2026.
