An abandoned school building in east Oak Cliff caught fire for the fifth time in three months Tuesday evening.
At 7:06 p.m. Tuesday, Dallas Fire-Rescue (DFR) units were assigned to a 911 call for a structure fire at a vacant school located at 3313 S. Beckley Avenue, the former site of Maya Angelou High School.
According to reports, the incident was called in by someone who saw fire inside the school as they were passing by. It’s unclear what firefighters observed when they arrived, but a second and third alarm response was dispatched to the location since it was originally called in; resulting in approximately 60–70 firefighters responding to mitigate the situation.
This is the fifth fire at the location since September (9/26, 10/13, 11/19, 12/2 and 12/3). The resulting damage from those fires have left the structural integrity in question in some places, so suppression efforts are defensive in nature. Additionally, the location is in the process of being abated and demolished, according to DISD.
The cause of the three-alarm fire is under investigation, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue, and no injuries were reported.
