On Wednesday, the Dallas City Council unanimously agreed to sell an empty, city-owned Oak Cliff hospital that was planned to be developed into permanent supportive housingĀ for homeless individuals.
Purchased for $6.5 million in 2022 by the Dallas City Council, the sale of the 12-acre property was initially briefed in a closed executive session; after the purchase, many residents said it was made with a ālack of transparencyāĀ for neighborhood stakeholders.
For the most part, neighbors were concerned about the location of the site, which sits across the street from Brashear Elementary, the Hampton-Illinois Branch Library and Kiest Park.
According to theĀ Dallas Morning News,Ā Anga Sanders, who has been working to bring quality amenities to Oak Cliff, said the 14-acre property could support a gated single-family community with three- to four-bedroom homes.
Council members debated the item and went into executive session for more than half an hour before deciding that the property will be sold if it meets the minimum price set by the city. If not, the bids will be reviewed by the City Council.
