Of the eight amendments submitted Aug. 29, three came from Oak Cliff council members.

District 8 Council Member Lorie Blair requested that $66,598 in one-time traffic calming funds from the ARPA Redevelopment Fund be redirected to operating expenses—such as maintenance, landscaping, electricity, water, gas, and other costs—for the district office at 3624 Simpson Stuart Road.

District 4 Council Member Maxie Johnson submitted two amendments, both of which propose increases to the city’s tax rate.

The first amendment would raise the proposed maintenance and operations tax rate by 0.034 cents, from 50.84 cents to 50.87 cents. The estimated $750,000 would be used to restore funding for seven full-time employees for operations at the Fair Park Media Center.

Johnson’s second amendment would increase the tax rate by 0.025 cents, from 50.87 cents to 50.89 cents, using $555,000 for the officeholder budget. The total would rise from $413,000 to $450,000—an increase of $37,000 per mayor or council member.

City staff analyzed the amendments over the weekend and will do so into Wednesday’s weekly council meeting. Any additional amendments must be submitted by 5 p.m. tonight and will be distributed ahead of the Sept. 3 meeting.

Following the discussion and review of amendments, the council will hold straw votes. The city manager is then expected to approve the First Reading of the budget, and after at least 10 days she will be asked to approve the Final Reading on Sept. 17.
