The 12-year-old Sumatran tiger Sukcita, known as Suki, gave birth to two healthy tiger cubs in the early morning hours of Feb. 22, according to a press release. The boy and girl cubs each weighed in at 2.5 pounds at birth and have been thriving under Suki’s care.

Sumatran tigers are the smallest of the tiger subspecies and are listed as critically endangered, with less than 600 remaining in the wild, according to the press release.

The zoo is inviting guests and supporters to help select the perfect name for the female cub through a donation-based voting contest. Name options include Alya, Merapi, and Rina.

“Our team is thrilled to share this special moment with our community,” Stephanie Allard, Chief Mission Officer/EVP of Animal Care & Conservation at the Dallas Zoo, said in a press release. “This naming contest is a fun and impactful way for guests to connect with these incredible animals while directly supporting conservation efforts that protect tigers in the wild.”

The donations from the naming contest will directly support the Dallas Zoo’s mission to care for animals and to support conservation initiatives that protect endangered species. The naming contest fundraiser is open now and will close on Monday, April 20, at 5 p.m.
