Swirled Peace is opening at 309 W. 8th St., in a Craftsman house that used to be an art gallery. Founder Sara Saginaw, who lives in Bishop Arts, said they are about three weeks out from a soft opening. Saginaw’s inspiration? Making sure everybody can enjoy a delicious sweet treat without worrying about a stomach ache.

“I’ve always been an ice cream fanatic, and I wanted to offer something that wouldn’t make people sick,” Saginaw said. “A lot of people get sick with ice cream — I was getting sick with ice cream — and I felt like this was something our community really needed. My goal is for it to just be very inclusive.”

At the self-serve store, customers can come in and fill their bowls with whatever flavors they want, and as much as they want. They can then top it off with candies, fruit, nuts, chocolate sauce, caramel and more. All toppings will be plant-based.

The store will feature oak milk-based vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors and will rotate flavors such as peanut butter, white chocolate and hazelnut.

“The concept is really to have unlimited possibilities and make whatever creation they want without whatever ethical or nutritional values they have or allergies since we’re all dairy-free,” Saginaw said. “Given that 70 percent of the population is lactose intolerant, everyone can come in and enjoy and not leave with an upset tummy.”
