In January, owner Luis Olvera found himself locked out of his Jefferson Boulevard restaurant. Olvera owed his landlord $36,000 in back rent, triggering the lockout.

Trompo moved to five locations in seven years, but the move in September 2022 to the Jefferson Boulevard store was what Olvera hoped would be his final location. He also opened two offshoot restaurants in that time, including a Bishop Arts location that closed in December 2021.

“Jefferson was my final push, my Hail Mary,” Olvera told D Magazine in January.

After being locked out of the store in Januray, Olvera created a GoFundMe which raised over $20,000 in public donations and allowed him to reopen.

This final closure comes after months of financial struggle, Olvera told the Dallas Morning News.

“I’ve been losing money since I opened at this location,” Olvera said in an interview with the Morning News. “I literally poured everything I have into this and I just keep struggling. I just decided that the best thing to do here was just say goodbye.”

Trompo had a good run. In 2016, the taqueria garnered national attention after landing on Bon Appétit’s list of the best tacos in the whole country.
