Police said the student sustained non life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

The incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. at South Oak Cliff Renaissance Park near the campus on S. Marsalis Avenue, just before the end of the school day, according to authorities.

Officials said after the teenage girl was struck by gunfire, she went back to the campus to seek medical help. School administrators delayed dismissal as officers from the Dallas Police Department arrived and began investigating. The school was temporarily placed on lockdown.

Investigators are still working to find out what led to the shooting in the first place. Mental health resources are being offered for students Tuesday.
