Cure for Paranoia, the band described as a “Deep Ellum baby,” is returning to their homebase in Oak Cliff this weekend.
The group is performing as a part of the Louder Than Stigma benefit, hosted this Saturday, Sept. 6 at The Kessler Theater in honor of Suicide Prevention Month. The event will feature live music and art, as well as a custom jacket auction.
The collaboration is put together by Amplified Minds, including a Mental Health Activation Area that will showcase organizations with a focus on suicide prevention, mental health and community support.
All proceeds from the evening will benefit Amplified Minds, which provides free mental health care to North Texans.
Cameron McCloud, writer and lead vocalist of Cure for Paranoia, said this collaboration has been a long time coming and something that the Dallas music scene has needed the entire time.
“One thing that I’ve learned, being in the scene in Dallas with Cure for Paranoia and meeting different musicians and meeting different artists that are on the scene, I’ve learned that I’m not the only person with mental illness out here,” he said.
Personally, the origin of Cure for Paranoia stems from McCloud being placed on medication for bipolar depression and paranoid schizophrenia.
“I started to kind of delve into music as therapy and as a way to cope, and as a way to help other people cope,” he said.
Cure for Paranoia is a revolving group, with artists coming in and out to make the sound a reality. Taking inspiration from OutKast, Nirvana and the Gorillaz, McCloud’s latest song “No Brainer” releases Sept. 4 at midnight just ahead of this weekend’s event.
“No Brainer” in particular is an ode to the era of Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, as Cobain’s music is a huge inspiration for McCloud since the 90s grunge musician “delves a lot into mental health and where his head is at.”
The new track is kind of like a love letter to Nirvana from Cure for Paranoia, he said.
The song is a part of an EP in the works for the group, titled “Work of Art,” that will be released later this year.
