Following the budget discussions last month, the City of Dallas Park and Recreation Board met to complete an evaluation of the community pools. Three city pools, Jaycee Zaragoza, Glendale and Grauwyler pools will be shut down per the approved $5.2 billion 2025-26 City budget.
The biggest takeaways from the evaluation included understanding the age of the pools, attendance and daily average use, drive time to the nearest aquatic center and the availability of nearby spraygrounds.
Based on that information, each facility was scored to determine when the pool should be closed with stronger candidates for decommission receiving lower scores, according to the Community Pools Decommissioning Recommendation.
Ranking of Legacy Community Pools:
- Grauwyler Pool
- Glendale Pool
- Walnut Hill Pool
- Everglade Pool
- Jaycee-Zaragoza Pool
- Bonnie View Pool
- Martin Weiss Pool
- Tommie M. Allen Pool
- Pleasant Oaks Pool
Four pools were slated for closure in a proposed amendment by District 14 council member Paul Ridley, including the Martin Weiss Pool, near Clarendon Drive. The amendment failed, which keeps the pool open in line with the original expectation that the pool will remain open because it is one of the most attended facilities.
Martin Weiss has a visitation average of 189 people per day and is the second-oldest pool of the list, built in 1953.
“In addition to providing tax relief, we prevented the immediate closure of the Martin Weiss Pool,” District 1 council member Chad West said. “While the city will transition out the aging community pools in the coming years, I’m working with neighbors on a creative long term solution to ensure West Oak Cliff residents have the amenities they demand and deserve.”
The closure of the three pools is part of an approved 2015 aquatic master plan, according to a Dallas Morning News article. The city council is considering three pool closures every year for the next three fiscal years with the goal of building new aquatic centers.
