New furniture store, Simply Austin, to open in Bishop Arts this week

Austin-based furniture store Simply Austin is expanding to our neighborhood.

The retailer is expected to open in the garage space on Bishop at Eighth as early as Wednesday.

Owner Ben Britton says he opened the store in Austin with his mom about four years ago. His sister Whitney lives in Dallas, and that’s why they chose to expand here, he says.

I had a similar reaction when I saw it. I love that this corner will have a store in it, but I wish it was a local business. I’ll give them a chance, but the name doesn’t go very far toward gaining my loyalty. I wish them the best and and maybe they’ll be really spectacular, but Oak Cliff doesn’t (and shouldn’t) have Austin envy.

I’m so sick of people trying to equate Oak Cliff with Austin that my gut reaction when I saw that sign the other day was disgust. If they really want to ingratiate themselves with the locals they should call this branch “Simply Oak Cliff”.
