This weekend: Poetry slam, Kubrick and Herzog, scaraoke

full_metal_jacket_1987The Bishop Arts Theater Center presents “Brave Young Voices,” a night of spoken word, live music and dance, starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. Featured artists include Will Richey, Alejandro Perez and Individual World Poetry Slam champion Joaquin Zihuatanejo.

The Kessler has Billy Harvey with Salim Nourallah and Robert Gomez Friday. Deborah Vial performs Saturday.

The Texas Theatre is showing a 35-mm print of Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket all weekend. Iceberg Slim: Portrait of a Pimp screens Friday and Saturday. Joshua Oppenheimer’s documentary “The Act of Killing” (trailer below) screens for one show only, at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

That makes for a pretty heavy line-up, but then Mr. Rid presents “scaraoke” at 10 p.m. Saturday.
