Support local businesses, snag discounts this holiday weekend

Our December cover story is all about locally-made gift ideas from neighborhood residents — most of whom work out of their homes. But there are ways to support our brick-and-mortar shops, too.

After the crowds swarm the malls and big-box shopping centers this Black Friday (and in some cases, Thursday), local shops are coming together for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30.

Independent retailers will offer sales and promotions of up to 75 percent off that day to encourage shoppers to keep their money right here in the community.

Brad Schweig of Sunnyland Furniture in Far North Dallas launched in 2011, starting with just a few local businesses. This year, with support from American Express, he has more than 70 retailers participating all over Dallas-Fort Worth.

Shops around Oak Cliff include Brumley Gardens and Home on Bishop. Find the full list of participating retailers here.
