We predicted earlier this year that the Elmwood commercial district could become “the Bishop Arts for locals.”

It has a fabulous stock of mid-20th century architecture and a delightful neighborhood surrounding it.

The neighborhood association recently posted these old pictures of the district, given to them by neighbor Susan Lee. Some neighbors said it looks like the facades might’ve been spiffied up for the 1989 film “Born on the Fourth of July,” which was filmed here.

They’re looking for more old photos of the area if anyone has some.

I only have memories to share. Elmwood kids playing tag at MB Henderson, Bodifords, Cates and the old 7-11. The house on the corner of Edgefield south of Henderson with an elaborate Halloween display. Trails along the creek, swimming at Henderson pool and Parkers little store on Polk near Mountain Lake. Pink Air, Fina with Plash and Dino outside the Sinclair station. The original Beauticontrol Cosmetics in the little Austin Stone building on Brunner. I was an Elmwood boy during that age of innocence.

The neighborhood association also has a nice little fundraiser selling vintage Elmwood logo windshield stickers for $2 apiece.

The first half of this video shows a lot more. Filming took place in 1988.

Linda, I would love it if you could share your photos with the Elmwood Neighborhood Association. Here is a link to their blog, including a form where you can contact them with your info. Thanks!

The pictures of Elmwood were taken during the filming of Born on the Fourth of July. I have others.
