She was 63.

Lopez’s most recent endeavor was the nonprofit Vecinos Unidos, dedicated to providing affordable housing to low-income families. She also fought for immigrants’ rights and accessible healthcare.

Lopez moved to Dallas, where her parents were born, from Buffalo, N.Y. in 1991, according to Al Día. She cofounded Lesbiana Latinas de Dallas in 1995.
