City Councilman Chad West says he wants Royal Blue Grocery to meet with community members about a proposed $700,000 in subsidies before a City Council vote.

City Council was supposed to hear the case this week, but West says he is moving the hearing to January so the company has time to meet with neighbors.

The Austin-based grocer wants a $350,000 economic development grant and a $350,000 low-interest loan to operate a store, restaurant and takeout kitchen at 634 W. Davis St. the site of the old Bolsa Mercado. In exchange, the grocer would create 25-28 new jobs paying $13 an hour.

Royal Blue has occupied that building for months and uses the address on some of its pre-packaged food items but hasn’t opened a store there yet.

We will let you know when a community meeting with Royal Blue is scheduled.
