We saw this coming even before a fire gutted the unique old Polar Bear Ice Cream Stand on Zang earlier this year, but its absence is still striking after some 90 years. The roof caved in on the building about two weeks ago, and demolition put it out of its misery today.

The building made Heritage Oak Cliff’s list of the most-endangered architecture in Oak Cliff after it was damaged in a wind storm in 2016.

The building was constructed as a hamburger stand the 1930s, and it became Polar Bear Ice Cream in 1946.

The property is owned by the Firebird Restaurant Group, the company that owns El Fenix. The company is selling the nearby El Fenix on Colorado Boulevard to a San Antonio-based developer that has plans to build an eight-story apartment building there. Our calls to Firebird were not returned.
