A fire gutted the unique old Polar Bear Ice Cream building on Zang at Colorado Friday night.

The building was already in bad shape. It’s been vacant for years, and a wind storm a few years ago damaged its facade.

The building was constructed as a hamburger stand to serve busy Lake Cliff Park in the 1930s, and it became Polar Bear Ice Cream in 1946. If you grew up in Oak Cliff, you probably remember it like this.

Or like this.

The old Polar Bear, now a Tex-Mex cafe, is on the endangered list.

But now it looks like this.
