Sydney Lanier Expressive Arts Vanguard in West Dallas will take the name of an alumnus, Jesús Moroles, the sculptor who died in 2015.

Reagan served as postmaster general under Confederate President Robert E. Lee and later became a popular Texas politician.

Lanier was a musician, poet and author who served as a soldier for the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War and was known as the “poet of the Confederacy”.

Students at John Ireland Elementary in South Dallas researched their school’s own namesake, a former Texas governor, and found that he served in the Confederate States Army.

Their school community agreed to rename it in honor of civil-right activist Sylvia Mendez.
