It’s been a rough pandemic year for Jesús Carmona, the restaurateur who had to close his two popular taquerías.

Besides closing Tacos Mariachi, which had locations on Singleton Boulevard and Lower Greenville, he was laid up with a broken ankle for several months.

But the energetic Carmona still managed to open a more upscale restaurant in Bishop Arts, Chimichurri Argentinian Bistro & Bar, in August.

Now he’s opening a new taquería that’s similar to the old one, which received consistent praise from food critics and bloggers and was Flavortown approved after an appearance on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.

Milagro opens this month at 440 Singleton Blvd. next to the axe-throwing place.

Carmona says he named it “Milagro” because it’s a miracle to be back after recent woes. Similarly, mixologist James Slater began making and bottling his own amaro as bar manager of Chimichurri, which he labels Guardian Angel.

Slater was the head bartender at Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck when it permanently closed in May 2020.

He created the bar program for Milagro with lots of tequila, mescal and fresh-squeezed juices.

Here’s how a media release describes the food:

The menu is focused on Tijuana street tacos, with some carryover from Mariachi, but plenty of new options as well. Dishes include Mahi Mahi Birria Tacos, Pork Belly Al Pipil Tacos and the Campeona Burger, with a brioche bun, avocado mousse, sautéed shrimp, asado cheese, crumbled chicharrón and a jalapeño glaze, served with house-made fries. There will also be three different types of Sinaloa-style Ceviche and Veggie Bowls, with carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, elote and cilantro pesto.
