The Dallas owners of the small-footprint grocer and upscale convenience store are breaking with Austin-based Royal Blue and forming Berkley’s Market.

The company is closing its original Dallas location in Highland Park and rebranding  its other two stores, in the Dallas Art District and Downtown, as Berkley’s Market on July 1, the Dallas Morning News reports. The original Royal Blue opened in Austin in 2006, and the owners didn’t say why they’re parting ways with that company.

Royal Blue declined the City of Dallas’ offering of $350,000 in economic development loans to renovate the Oak Cliff store, in the former Bolsa Mercado at 634 W. Davis St., in January 2020. City Council declined to give the company economic development grants the grocer had requested in 2019 after neighbors opposed the funding.

Berkley’s Market owners are Zac Porter, his wife, Emily Ray-Porter and their friend, Cullen Potts. The rebranded grocery is named after their dog, Zac Porter told the newspaper.

The market is also a restaurant that will offer brunch, lunch and dinner service, the newspaper reports. The owners hinted that they still have plans for Highland Park and said that the format allows them to tailor each store to neighborhood demands.

The grocer leased the West Davis store in 2019 and has been using its kitchen to serve the other three stores.
