The vigil is in remembrance and support of the families of victims and those displaced by the apartment explosion that led to three fatalities and at least five injured. The vigil will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is organized by Senator Royce West, Representative Jessica González, District 1 Council member Chad West and Mission Oak Cliff. Flameless candles will be provided.

On Friday, May 29, the Dallas County Democrats held a vigil in honor of Sylvia Collins, who served as District 23 precinct chair, and the Oak Cliff community. The vigil outside of W.H. Adamson High School included a variety of faith leaders and elected officials who spoke of Collins’ advocacy.

“We can’t just let a week pass by and think that just showing up here today was us doing our duty,” State Rep. Cassandra Garcia Hernandez said at the Friday vigil. “We have to continue to keep showing up for each other. “

Pastor Gannon Sims of Cliff Temple Baptist Church and Mission Oak Cliff said that they have been inundated with donations to support those affected by the apartment explosion.

“We need each other, and that’s what the power of Jesus through the ministry of the Holy Spirit does,” Sims said at the Friday vigil. “And so thank you for being liked and life, no matter where you find yourself on the journey. We know that there is someone making everything new. We will get through. We will get through.”

Attendees are invited to join together Wednesday, June 3 to honor those affected, reflect as a community and stand in solidarity with the families, residents and first responders that were impacted by the May 28 fire.
