The restaurant has been around since 1985 but has upped its game since a second-generation owner took over in 2014.

Owner Kris Manning took out the old barbecue pit and replaced it with state-of-the-art smokers and has revamped the menu.

Texas Monthly barbecue editor Daniel Vaughan, who lives in Dallas, hasn’t put it on his list of the state’s best barbecue places yet — the most recent list came out in 2017. But he told WFAA that Smokey Joe’s is flying under the radar.

The TV station reports that customers line up for the brisket. The restaurant also serves home cooking such as chicken tetrazzini, plus mac and cheese and homemade pickles and desserts.

Smokey Joe’s is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday and closed on Mondays.
