The Dallas Mexican American Historical League opens “Nuestro Oak Cliff,” an exhibit about our neighborhood, on Sept. 16 at the Latino Cultural Center.

The project, which includes photos, documents and ephemera, plus a six-week speaker series, was spearheaded by young new members of the nonprofit, which has kept our city’s Mexican American heritage for several decades.

One of the league’s first projects was to publish the Dallas Barrio Map, showing all of the historic Hispanic neighborhoods in Dallas, many of which are gone or are fading because of gentrification, environmental pollution or loss of industry. But Oak Cliff, which began drawing lots of Mexican American residents and businesses in the ’70s and ’80s, wasn’t on that original map.

People from Oak Cliff have asked DMAHL for several years: ? “Where is the history of my barrio of Oak Cliff?”

The exhibit is free and runs through Oct. 15. See the schedule of speakers below. The Latino Cultural Center is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday.
