Neighbors on Evergreen Hills Drive and Knott Place turn their neighborhood island into a little piece of the North Pole every year.

“It really is the joy of this little neighborhood,” says Celina Buchanan, who lives on Knott Place. “We find a lot of pride in it and look forward to it every year.”

The tradition started in 2017, when neighbors decorated the traffic island, near 1025 Evergreen Hills, with their leftover Christmas decorations. Now every Sunday after Thanksgiving, they all get together with mimosas and hot chocolate to decorate it.

A few years ago, someone purchased an old U.S. Postal Service mailbox and had an auto shop paint and letter it. After that, the magic of Christmas took over.

It’s now the place to go to drop letters for Santa. Neighbors even set up an Instagram account, OC Santa. Santa can’t answer the letters — he’s too busy making toys. The first year, the box received about 120 letters, and last year there were around 500.

Homeowners on Evergreen Hills have started wrapping their trees in red-and-white lights to make a “candy cane lane.”

“It has a little life of its own,” Buchanan says. “We’re just happy it brings joy to so many neighbors.
