The fire started at about 10:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Oak Cliff United Methodist Church on East Jefferson at Marsalis.

Dallas Fire Rescue responded to a 911 call and broke through a boarded-up front door and extinguished the fire within about 30 minutes, department spokesman Jason Evans said.

“The damage was contained to the first and second levels of the sanctuary and resulted in damage to the flooring, a pipe organ, walls, doors, windows and the ceiling, but no injuries were reported,” he said.

DFR determined the fire was an accident, which started “as the result of an unidentified homeless person starting a warming fire on the second floor too close to combustible materials.”

Temperatures plunged into the low 20s Wednesday night.

The Dallas Landmark Commission in October found the building to be under “demolition by neglect,” in violation of Dallas city code.

The building at that time showed signs of water damage, cracked walls and damaged window sills. A YouTuber’s video from August also showed signs of squatters.

The demolition-by-neglect finding allowed the city’s Office of Historic Preservation to work with code enforcement to require property owner the Nayeb Group to make repairs.
