Manuel Tellez, 45, is accused of stabbing 52-year-old Anthony Moreno and then burning his body in an alley behind Kings Highway near Edgefield.

Manuel Tellez mugshot from the Dallas County Jail.

Police say Tellez stabbed Moreno multiple times in an alley in the 1300 block of Kings Highway early on Sunday, April 3. He then left, changed his clothes, and returned to the scene, where he poured gasoline on the man’s body and set him on fire, according to the Dallas Police Department.

DPD answered a 911 call just after 9:15 that morning.

Tellez was arrested Thursday and is being held in the Dallas County jail with bail set at $1.5 million.

He owns Maroches Bakery, which is known for its cookies, tres leches cake, pan de muerto and community events.

The bakery hosted a market on the sidewalk most Saturday nights, and Tellez is a well-known neighbor in the 1200 block of West Davis. The bakery is about three blocks from the scene of the crime.

Moreno was an art vendor “who loved to make art and share his creativity to others,” according to a crowd-funding website.

“Anthony Moreno is a family man, who loved his family whole heartedly,” the website states. “He was a great man who always put his family first, always trying to help his family not only financially but emotionally, spiritually and mentally. His death comes as a shock to not only us but also the art community here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.”

Moreno is survived by a wife, two sons, a daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and six grandchildren, the website states.

Tellez had been planning and promoting an art event for April 16.

The bakery owner also posted a link to a meal train set up for the victim’s family to his Facebook page.
