Eric Montes died in front of his mother after an attempted robbery just before midnight on May 8, Mother’s Day.

That’s according to reporting from KDFW. The Dallas Police Department recently released video of Montes’ killer approaching a vehicle, which Montes had been driving, and then running away after he shot the 25-year-old.

The killer’s face isn’t visible in the video, but it shows his build and gait.

This artist’s sketch of the killer is based on eyewitness description. He is described as Black and wearing dark pants, a long-sleeve shirt and white tennis shoes.

The shooting happened at the Cantera Crossing Apartments at 2727 W. Jefferson. Montes and his mother were just arriving home when they were approached by the would-be robber.

The man brandished a gun and demanded money from Montes. When he said he didn’t have any, the man demanded his mother’s purse. Then the killer said, “You’re going to die anyway,” Montes’ sister, Wendy, told the TV news station.

“She said that the man just came out of nowhere pretty much and was pointing a gun at my brother’s face,” Wendy Montes told KDFW. “My mom says the guy told them to give me your wallet, like ‘give me your money.’ And my brother said, ‘I don’t have anything. I don’t have any money.’ And then the guy told him, ‘Well give me your mom’s purse.’ And he told him the same thing. ‘I don’t have anything. Please don’t hurt her. She heard the man say, ‘You’re going to die anyway.’ And then my brother got up because he didn’t want my mom to get hurt.”

The killer got away with Montes’ cell phone.
