Vaughan, who grew up near Keist Park, began his acclaimed music career playing at venues and events throughout Oak Cliff. One of those events was the Cockrell Hill Jubilee.

The jubilee was held at the Hill Theater located at 4332 West Jefferson Blvd., and now, that land will be developed into a “public outdoor gathering space” named after Vaughan.

“The City of Cockrell Hill acquired the land in 2015 to develop the park to pay tribute to the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan and create a space for public enjoyment, giving artists and musicians an arena to promote their events and allowing families to simply enjoy the outdoors,” Carrera said.

According to Carrera, plans for the park include a food truck lane, a stage, lawn seating and “decorative walls displaying Stevie art murals created by local artist Steve Hunter.”

The city plans to inaugurate the park as part of an Earth Day celebration on April 22.

Carrera said the city has applied for a State Historical Marker for the park.
