The announcement comes just weeks after a GoFundMe was posted by Joanna Tatakis, who said her father’s declining health has put a strain on the business.

“As many of you know, my dad, Mike, has been suffering from poor health for over a year now. He has recently been sent home on hospice care,” the GoFundMe reads. “As dad’s sole caretaker, the restaurant has not been able to have regular hours for quite some time as I have tried to balance dad’s needs and the business’s. Unfortunately, this balancing act is no longer possible.”

Joanna Tatakis’ “public appeal” said donations would go towards rent, expenses and trying to find a caretaker for Mike so that she would be able to open the restaurant.

The GoFundMe raised nearly $13,000 dollars through 166 donations in just under two months.

Greek Cafe and Bakery, which was opened by Mike Tatakis, has had a nearly 14-year run at its W. Davis Street storefront. Before opening the Oak Cliff store, the shop was in Duncanville.

The Advocate featured Greek Cafe and Bakery in our Dec. 2021 magazine, and Joanna told us that opening a location in Oak Cliff was a dream come true for her mother, Mary Ann.

“There was so much I learned and so many people I met. And it was a beautiful thing: the ups and the downs, the hard times and the mistakes,” Joanna Tatakis told the Morning News. “I don’t have the right words to say thank you.”
