Kenny Timmes couldn’t believe his eyes after opening an email notifying him that he had been selected to coach this year’s North Texas All-Star high school baseball team.

But after calling up the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, the Sunset High School baseball coach realized the email was legitimate.

On June 18, Timmes will take to the diamond as one of four coaches for the North Texas team in the 49th Annual THSBCA All-Star Game in Round Rock, Texas.

“It’s a great big honor,” Timmes said. “I look at it as a really great opportunity.”

Timmes, who has coached baseball at Sunset High School for the last 15 years, was nominated by his peers for the All-Star coach position. Nominations are voted on and approved by a THSBCA panel, and eight coaches across the state receive the honor.

Four coaches are named to the North Texas team and four are named to the South Texas team.

While this will be his first time coaching an All-Star game in Texas, Timmes has handled the pressure of such a major game before.

44 years ago, Timmes began his coaching career in Colorado after closing out a minor league career. Since then, he has coached championship winning teams in Oklahoma and Mississippi, and been named to the states’ All-Star coaching rosters.

Throughout his coaching career, Timmes has totaled 727 wins.

Despite his past experience coaching All-Star games, Timmes said he expects the THSBCA game to be intense.

“It’s going to be exciting,” Timmes said. “Baseball in Texas is a big deal.”

While Timmes will not know his team’s roster until he arrives in Round Rock, he said he will have the opportunity to coach “some of the top athletes in North Texas.”

He expects the games will be attended by college scouts, and anticipates a handful of the All-Star players will eventually end up on major league rosters.
