The show will begin August 10, and go on for three consecutive weekends. Tickets are on sale for $20-30 on the Bishop Arts Theater Center website.

“One Year in Egypt is a brief look at race, colorism, geography, history, sexism, class and education being brought to the front and dealt with in a wonderful technologically enhanced moment on stage,” the Bishop Arts Theater Center website says.

During her time in Egypt, Spencer taught as a middle school ESL teacher. She also turned 50 during that year.

“This show is frank, funny, emotional, and informative, as she narrates her personal transformation while deconstructing the myths associated with how she romanticized Africa as a ‘woke’ woman who’d never been to the Motherland – thus a wake-up call,” Visit Dallas said about the show.

Spencer is a best-selling author and playwright from Oak Cliff and is a 2018 50-in-50 Monologue Winner, a 2019 Lee Daniels/Represent OMV Creatives Winner and a 2022 Scriptapalooza Finalist. Along with this show, she is working on her third book, Flagrant. Spencer also invests in indie movies, the latest one being Love In Black which premiered at the South Dallas Culture Center in February last year.
