And with Saturday’s win over Melissa High School, they are one step closer.

The reigning Class 5A Division II state champions claimed the area title after the 38-30 victory, which puts the Golden Bears only three wins away from a third consecutive state championship matchup at AT&T Stadium.

“It’s an honor winning a title,” South Oak Cliff head coach Jason Todd told the Dallas Morning News. “But the real honor is being able to defend it week by week when challenges come up.”

South Oak Cliff will now face off against Midlothian Heritage in the regional semifinal.

The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday Nov. 24 at Mesquite Memorial Stadium.

Before facing the Golden Bears, Melissa’s only loss of the season had been to Lovejoy High School. If South Oak Cliff and Lovejoy  win their respective Friday matches, the teams will face each other in the Regional final.

South Oak Cliff currently holds the record as the first school in DISD to win two consecutive football state championships.
