Nearly 3,000 students competed in the Dallas ISD fall chess tournaments this month, marking the largest districtwide chess program and chess tournaments in North Texas. And across many grade levels, Oak Cliff schools achieved high rankings in the tournaments.

In the K-2 category, Thomas L. Marsalis Elementary STEAM Academy tied for first place. Rosemont Upper Campus School was awarded third place in the 3rd grade category and fifth place in the 7th grade division.

The 8th grade team at West Dallas’ Dallas Environmental Science Academy clinched third place.

Townview was the high school division leader, with the School for the Talented and Gifted and the School of Science and Engineering claiming first and third place, respectively, at the 9th-10th grade level.

The 11th-12th grade division saw the School of Science and Engineering at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center as first place champions.

At the fall competitions students competed for first, second and third place rankings at through multiple rounds of chess against opponents decided by win and loss records. Students practiced for the tournaments at their home campuses.

The elementary tournament took place Nov. 4 at Thomas Jefferson High School and Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy and boasted 2,101 K-5th grade players.

The middle and high school tournament took place at the Obama Male Leadership Academy on Nov. 11.

Spring chess tournaments will be held in April and May of 2024, according to DISD.
