Last fall, former chief of police John Lawton announced his retirement, prompting a comprehensive search for his successor. The search led the district to select Albert Martinez.

In his new role, Martinez will collaborate with a team to ensure the safety and protection of Dallas ISD’s 141,000 students and over 23,000 employees.

With over 30 years of experience in law enforcement and public safety, Martinez’s career includes serving as the executive assistant chief of police for the Dallas Police Department in 2020 and as the director of security and safety for the Catholic Diocese of Dallas. According to WFAA, in 2021, he returned to DPD at Chief Eddie Garcia’s request, contributing to investigations, special operations, community engagement, and police operation technology.

Lawton, with more than 23 years of experience at DPD in various roles as a patrol officer, canine handler, assistant chief of police and commander of the police academy, transitioned to the Dallas ISD police department in 2018. He initially served as the assistant chief of police before becoming chief of police.

According to Dallas ISD, the district congratulates Chief Lawton for his retirement and service to Dallas ISD.

Lawton will collaborate with Martinez for a smooth leadership transition.

Martinez will assume his new position in February 2024.
