After years of delay on the project, it will now move forward as St. Jude’s will convert the hotel into about 70 units of permanent supportive housing, with preference given for tenants who are veterans, disabled or elderly.

The city initially purchased the hotel in 2020 for $3.5 million in federal COVID funds, but long delays in re-developing it put the project on hold. As it stands, the project will not be ready for people to move in until early 2026.

The council also unanimously approved the special use permit (SUP) allowing St. Jude to operate at this location for the next five years.

“I’m glad to see that the 1950 Fort Worth project is moving forward, thanks to the unanimous support of my colleagues,” District 1 Council Member Chad West said in a statement. “St. Jude is the gold standard for permanent supportive housing in our city, and I’m glad they said they will accept the Good Neighbor terms that the community worked hard to compile. We must solve homelessness with a data-driven approach, and evidence from St. Jude Forest Lane shows no impact on crime and an increase in real estate prices for the nearby community. I look forward to the next steps and eventually welcoming new neighbors.”
