Texas Monthly released its list of the top 50 tacos in Texas yesterday, and a spot in Oak Cliff made the top 10.
Taco editor and author of American Tacos: A History & Guide Jose Ralat traveled over 14,000 miles and ate over 1,200 tacos to compile the list. Placing No. 9 on his list of best tacos was Maskaras Mexican Grill.
Maskaras’ tacos ahogados — carnitas-filled corn tortillas folded and deep fried before being submersed in a mild salsa — were Ralat’s favorite.
“Their bite is snappy enough, but customers who want something with more spark can request spicier salsa on the side,” Ralat wrote. “It will send ripples of heat across the tongue before settling down.”
Maskaras owners Rodolfo Jiménez and Zulma V. Hernández have reimagined the traditional Mexican restaurant into a vibrant celebration of Lucha Libre culture. Nestled in the heart of Oak Cliff, it’s in its eighth year of operating.
Jiménez, a former model, actor and host along with his wife, Zulma, an entrepreneur and former beauty queen from Jalisco, aimed to break away from the stereotypical decor as the space is decked out with lucha libre memorabilia, including figurines, framed masks, illustrations, and photos.
Maskaras joins four other Dallas taquerias, including one other named to the top 10, on the list.
