Nearly 50 candidates vied for seats on the Dallas City Council this year, and Oak Cliff will have two new council members representing the neighborhood while Chad West retained his place in District 1.
Of the four open city council seats, two were in Oak Cliff: District 8, which covers parts of southern Dallas, represented by Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins; and District 4, which covers the East Oak Cliff area in southern Dallas, represented by Carolyn King Arnold. Atkins and Arnold were term-limited.
New City Council members are set to be sworn-in on June 16.
District 1 (North Oak Cliff)
Incumbent Chad West defeated his challenger Katrina Whatley with 58.78% of the vote. Whatley received 39.17% of the vote while Jason Vanhof had 2.05%
West was first elected by North Oak Cliff residents in May 2019 and reelected in 2021 and 2023 — he has lived in Oak Cliff for nearly two decades.
District 4 (South Oak Cliff)
Maxie Johnson received 74.99% of the vote to defeat Kebran W. Alexander and Avis Hardaman.
For the past 6 years, Johnson has served as an elected representative on the Dallas ISD school board.
District 8 (Far southern Dallas, including Red Bird, Highland Hills)
Erik Wilson and Lorie Blair will head to a runoff for the Place 8 seat. Neither candidate had more than 50% of the vote.
The runoff election is on June 7.
