Inside this new art gallery on Jefferson Boulevard, there’s a 5-foot-tall statue of the late Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel.
Mercado, in a ground-floor space at Jefferson Tower, has 12 stalls for a rotating cast of Latino artists.
It’s the venture of Jorge Baldor, founder of the Latino Center for Leadership Development. The market will sell art and handmade goods from artists from all over South and Central America. Each space also includes video interviews with the artists.
The market will offer monthly workshops and musical performances. There’s also a restaurant, Cafe Hatuey, offering coffee, beer, wine and spirits, plus food.
Some of the profits from Mercado will go to a reforestation project in Oaxaca and to build a school in a remote part of Peru.
