Dallas ISD & District 7 Updates:

Dallas ISD announces “Principal of the Year” and “Master Principal” Awards: Dallas ISD announced the winners for Principal of the Year last month. District 7’s very own Principal Ida Escobedo of Margaret Henderson Elementary won the Elementary Principal of the Year Award! District 7 leaders who were named Master Principals were: Kathryn Carter (L.O. Donald Elementary School), Ida Escobedo (Henderson Elementary School), Lourdes Garduño (Winnetka Elementary School), Dr. Macario Hernandez (Trini Garza Early College), Salem Hussain (Quintanilla Middle School), and Kelly Sanchez (Arcadia Park Elementary School). Congratulations to these world-class leaders!

New downtown Montessori school and South Dallas arts academy now accepting applications: Last month, I was excited to vote on the approval of two new Dallas ISD choice schools: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Arts Academy in South Dallas and the downtown Montessori Elementary School located on Main Street. These schools will provide even more education options to area families.

The downtown Montessori school anticipated to open in August is now accepting applications. Admission priority will be given to downtown residents and downtown employees, and then district families. Families can apply here: https://www.dallasisd.org/Page/56054

Meanwhile, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Arts Academy will usher a new era of arts education into the South Dallas community. The Arts School will be converted from the MLK Learning Center in South Dallas. Students currently enrolled at MLK will have the opportunity to continue attending the school while students who live in the surrounding area will have priority access in attending. Families can apply here:  https://www.dallasisd.org/Page/56058

The application period for Dallas ISD choice schools is now open through Jan. 31. Parents can learn more about the specialty schools offered in Dallas ISD by visiting https://www.dallasisd.org/yourchoices and choose the best school that fits the needs and interests of their child. An application workshop will be held Jan. 25 where families can visit with school representatives to learn more about specialty programs and will also be able to apply on-site.
